NEW PATTERN-- CLOUD 9 GLOVES

Cloud Nine Gloves
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

These gloves are a cinch to make! The simple braided cable gives a touch of style to an otherwise normal pair of wrist warmers, and the angora/wool blend used for these gloves gives them a nice vintage feel, plus lots of warmth! You can substitute any worsted weight wool yarn, you will need about 100 yards, though I would say 110 to be safe! Using a wool or wool blend yarn will be best to show cables and prevent unnecessary stretching and bagging of the gloves. Plus wool wicks away moisture quite nicely!

You can find several ways to add variations to the pattern here: More gloves ideas

Size: One size fits most, you can alter the number of stitches for the st st if you need them wider. If you want to make the gloves longer or wider you will need more yarn.

MATERIALS
-1 skein Cascade Yarns “cloud 9” color 121 50% angora/ 50% wool 109 yards/skein
- Size 7 dpns
-a cable needle if you use them to cable

GUAGE
About 4 st/in

NOTES
-C1 means to C6F. Working with the 9 stitches that form the cable, cable the first 3 stitches over the next three stitches towards the front. Knit the next three stitches.
- C2 means C6B. Working with the 9 stitches that form the cable, knit 3 then cable 6 stitches to the back.
-C1 and C2 are alternated to create the braid pattern. You can increase the tightness of the pattern or decrease it by changing the number of rows between cables, just be sure to continue shaping the thumb hole etc in the correct places.
-You maintain the st st and purl stitches unless other wise noted on the cable rounds.

they are pretty easy to do one you mess around with them a bit.

I really want to see these gloves in some handspun yarn :) I think cabls show off handspun reaally well, as does lace.

The best thing about knitting....you can take it out and restart without ruining anything :)

I like your thumb-hole method a lot better than the one from the Voodoo pattern.

Aw man. Now I'm a little bummed because I have been working on a rather similar pattern that I was hoping to post later today or tomorrow. It is also braid cable wristwarmers. But it's different yarn, different type of thumbhole, different cuff, different amount of stitches, etc. Definitely a different pattern, but we were totally thinking along the same lines, I guess.

Ah, well, I'll post it anyway, and people will have a choice. :)

(The vertical thumbhole didn't work on mine because it distorted the cable. I wonder why that didn't happen with yours? Maybe because you had a couple of extra stitches before you started it? I switched to a horizontal thumbhole and it solved the problem.)

i think you can sort of see it in the black and white photo, but you have to do a few stiches in st st before you make an opening to "take the weight" of the thumb hole so to speak. It also depends on where you put the cable in relation to the opening (mine goes more towards the thumb naturally so it doesnt need to be distorted. Whereas, when you do a horizontal thumb hole openning the stitches are more likely to be pulled vertically as you insert your thumb, distorting the cable vertically (which may not be as noticable then)

Hmm, well techinally my gloves are called "cloud 9 gloves" and they sound pretty diff to me, so Id post the pattern anyways, everyone has diff ways of writing patterns and diff pattern preferences, and it *is* winter, so i say the more glove patterns the better!

Heh. Yes, I think that was the issue -- I made the thumbhole too close to the cable panel. I ended up ripping it all back. But it's a quick knit, at least, so it wasn't too painful.

Actually, now that I look at your cable pattern, I think it's different. Mine's a braid, but it is a looser braid. So that part is different too. It is neat how with the same basic idea we can both come up with such different variations.

(This time I logged in since I am on my own computer.)

[info]wengeue: Braid cable armwarmers: EVERYWHERE!

I am laughing now because I just went and looked at the Knitscene (magazine -- the new one from Interweave) web site, and what did I see, but... braid cable "fingerless mitts" as they call them. See this. Yes, everyone is doing them now, aren't they? Knitscene's look more like my pattern than yours, but they are longer and in a cashmere blend. And I can't quite tell for sure but I think they have a thumb gusset. Now I have got to get a look at their pattern.

So anyone who wants cabled armwarmers can have a pattern that suits their needs, I guess! They are all over the place! :D

haha, i think that just proves we both have good taste/popular taste if designs like ours are showing up in mags at the same time!

I like these. And I will definately be doing this pattern sometime.:) (I work outside, and the gloves I wore made it a bit hard to knit. Maybe the finger-less part would make that easier.:D Maybe I could make them into those mittens where part of it folds back and *wah lah* it's a fingerless glove!)

(Anonymous): Awesome Pattern.

I love this pattern. I have made one of them so on to make the other one. I really like the pattern and the side thumb opening. Glad to find this great pattern. I am doing just a tad different. I am putting a 1x1 rib for 2 rows at the beginning and at the end of the glove so it won't roll. Also I am working it as 10/15/10 since yarn is a little bulky. Also for us short fingered people. I am only doing 1 set of the cables before doing the thumb area instead of the repeat. I love this pattern. Very easy to adapt for us short fingered, fat wristed people. Thank you so much for sharing this pattern
